Playmakers and Scorers: Knowing Your Role to Win

Almost every successful business runs on teamwork. And just like in sports, every player has a role that contributes to the overall win. On most team, we think about two types of employees: Scorers and Playmakers.  Shoutout to Jake Mauro for describing this so succinctly.

Scorers: The Front Line of Success

Our Scorers are the ones out front, building relationships, serving customers, and closing sales. They’re the ones putting points on the board. Scorers thrive on competition and results, and their focus is on bringing new business through the doors. Without them, the scoreboard doesn’t light up.

Playmakers: The Support That Fuels the Win

But just as important are our Playmakers - the support staff, managers, and behind-the-scenes teammates. Playmakers see the big picture, understand the mission, and make it as easy as possible for Scorers to succeed. They set up the systems, remove the obstacles, and deliver the assists that make scoring possible.

For a true Playmaker, a great assist is often just as satisfying as scoring themselves. They know the value of putting others in a position to win.

Respecting Every Role

A team only works when everyone understands and respects each role. Scorers can’t win without Playmakers setting them up. And Playmakers can’t succeed without Scorers finishing the job. When each person embraces their position and trusts the others to do theirs, the whole team executes at a higher level.

The Lesson for Business Leaders

Great companies don’t happen by accident. They’re built when every employee knows their role, owns it, and supports the mission. Whether you’re a Scorer or a Playmaker, your contribution is vital. And when everyone plays their part, the team wins together.
