I'm Pushing Again

When I was a younger leader, and even early in my coaching career, I was ambitious. I pushed clients hard - sometimes harder than they wanted to be pushed. Some responded well. Others…not so much.

Over time, I softened that approach. When I explained goal setting, I leaned heavily on the SMART framework: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. I would always emphasize “attainable,” making sure each team member believed their goals were within reach. For leaders and teams just starting out, this builds confidence and momentum. It works.

But here’s the trap: too many leaders stop there. They stay comfortable. They hit most of their rocks, they accomplish more than they once thought possible, but still far less than they’re truly capable of.

That’s why I love The Science of Scaling by Dr. Ben Hardy. This book reminded me that my role isn’t just to help clients set “safe” goals. It’s to help them see what’s actually possible - and then push them to rise to it.

So here’s the question as we push into Q4 of 2025 and prepare for 2026:

What if you only had 12 months to achieve your three-year goals?

If you truly embraced that challenge, you’d start changing things today. And that’s the point. Great goals don’t let us stay the same. They force us to question our focus, shift our behavior, and raise our floor.

So in 2026, let’s not just stay “attainable.” Let’s get ambitious. Let’s change SMART goals from “Attainable” to “Ambitious.”
